PIC-SURE categorical variables can be filtered by specific terms or categories.
For example, if you were interested in diabetes, you could begin your search by typing “diabetes” into the search box. All variables that include “diabetes” will be displayed; this includes cases where the word “diabetes” is in either the variable name or the value for a variable. An example of results when searching “diabetes” is shown below.
Once you determine the variable you are interested in, you can refine your query to filter participants with certain values to build your cohort. To continue with the diabetes example above, you can filter the cohort to participants with Type I diabetes by selecting the “Type I diabetes mellitus” variable. This allows for further refinement of your query.
The values available for this categorical variable are Positive and Negative. For this example, we will filter for individuals who have Type I diabetes by clicking Positive, which will add it to the list of Selected Values.
When the variable of interest has been selected, you can run the query using the “Run” button. The total number of participants in the results box will update to reflect the number of individuals that meet your query criteria. In this example, there are 200 participants that have positive values for Type I diabetes mellitus.
