Explore Page Overview

The Explore page provides an interface to search for terms of interest, apply filters on variables and genomic variants, view variable distributions, browse variant data, and prepare data for analysis.

Explore page features and layout.

A: Faceted search. The panel on the left-hand side of the screen provides options, or facets, to narrow down your search results.

B: Search bar. The search bar at the top center of the page allows for searching of phenotypes, clinical outcomes, and variables of interest.

C: Search Results table. The search results table displays the variables that are returned based on the combination of search term and selected facets.

D: Actions for filtering and selecting variables. Information about icon actions from left to right:

  • The Information icon allows you to view information associated with the variable.

  • The Filter icon allows you to apply a variable-level filter.

  • The Hierarchy icon allows you to apply filters on different nodes within that variable's concept path. For example, let's say we click the hierarchy icon of the "AGE" variable from the NHANES dataset. This will show the concept path for the variable: NHANES, Demographics, AGE. We can click on the "Demographics" level to add a filter that selects participants with data associated with all NHANES Demographics variables.

  • The Add Variable icon allows you to add a variable to the dataset. Note that this will not subset the cohort.

E: Genomic Filtering. The Genomic Filtering button to the right of the search bar can be used to apply genomic filters to your cohort selection criteria. For more information about genomic filtering, please refer to the Genomic Filtering section.

F: Prepare for Analysis. Once at least one filter has been added, the Prepare for Analysis button can be used to retrieve participant-level data corresponding to your filters and variable selections. To learn more about the options for retrieving data, please refer to the Prepare for Analysis section.

Tool Suite. The Tool Suite contains tools that can be used to explore filtered cohorts of interest. Note that at least one filter must be added to the query before using the Tool Suite.

G: Variable Distributions. View the distributions of query variables based on the filtered cohort. Note that there is a limit to the number of variable distributions that can be viewed at a given time. For categorical variables with more than seven categories included in the query, seven categories will be displayed in the bar chart plus an additional "Other" bar that combines all other categories. Additionally, genomic variables nor variables associated with any-record-of filter (e.g. entire datasets) will not be graphed.

H: Variant Explorer. Once at least one genomic filter is added, you can use the Variant Explorer to view metadata about the variants included in your cohort. For more information, please view the Variant Explorer section.
